Explained: Why the Barcelona midfielder played with a bandage in the Copa del Rey clash

Barcelona started the new year strongly by achieving a comfortable 4-0 victory over Barbastro, in the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey.

There were several highlights from the convincing victory, with Robert Lewandowski scoring a brace while two fringe players, Eric Garcia and Pablo Torre, also found the back of the net.

However, in a surprising moment of the match, star midfielder Gavi entered the field for the second half with a prominent bandage on his right hand.

Why did Gavi use the bandage?

A recent report by Catalunya Radio has shed more light on how Gavi carried the blindfold against Barbastro last night.

Contrary to initial fears of serious injury, the report clarifies that Gavi is not facing anything serious.

Instead, the taping was a precautionary measure following an incident during training on December 31.

Frustrated by his performance in the session, the Andalusian midfielder got carried away by his emotions and hit a wall with his hand when entering the locker room.

The impulsive action left him with a painful blow, but fortunately he did not suffer any fractures or significant damage.

Given Gavi’s combative style and intense personality both on and off the field, this incident aligns with the traits that have made him a fan favorite.

Despite the mishap, Gavi was considered fit to participate in the match and replaced Pedri in the second half.

Following the convincing victory, Gavi will now turn his attention to Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup trip next week, when they face Athletic Club in the semi-finals.

With Dani Olmo’s registration problems dragging on, coach Hansi Flick could turn to Gavi to provide the ‘X factor’ in the final third next week.
