Barcelona eager to discuss new contract with 25-year-old local talent

Iñaki Peña became the big topic of conversation after Barcelona’s entertaining 5-4 victory over SL Benfica in the Champions League last night.

The Spaniard had to settle for a place on the bench against Benfica. Wojciech Szczesny started in place of Peña in goal, but had a difficult game, in which he gave up a goal and conceded a penalty.

Barcelona wants to solve Peña’s contractual situation

In light of Peña’s snub against Benfica, a recent report from Sports World has offered a new update on the player’s future.

The report suggests that Barcelona are keen to sit down with the Spanish goalkeeper and discuss a potential contract extension.

Barça is interested in extending Peña’s contract, which expires in 2026. The ideal would be for the goalkeeper to continue being the main alternative to Marc-André ter Stegen.

Peña, for his part, has remained silent about his future. Barça, yes, wants to renew his contract regardless of whether he stays at the club or not.

It seems that the Catalans are interested in avoiding the scenario in which Iñaki Peña leaves the club for free.

But as mentioned above, the club would ideally like to have the Spaniard beyond 2026 and eventually become the starting goalkeeper. The coaching staff is very happy with Peña’s performance since Ter Stegen’s injury.

Therefore, Peña will soon have to make a decision. The Spaniard had joined the Barcelona youth academy as a child and now has to decide between staying at Barça and continuing to play second fiddle or looking for a new challenge elsewhere.

The prospect of becoming Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper will surely be more rewarding for Peña. But the idea of moving elsewhere and gaining a quick lead may also be tempting for the Spanish goalkeeper.
