Clement Lenglet was one of many Barcelona stars to leave the club to go on loan elsewhere.
After discovering his lack of prominence in Hansi Flick’s setup, the Frenchman joined Atlético de Madrid on a season-long loan.
After a relatively slow start to the season, Lenglet has become a key player for Atleti, taking advantage of Robin le Normand’s injury.
Atleti considers Lenglet’s permanent departure
According to MARCA, Lenglet’s latest performances have not gone unnoticed at Atlético de Madrid.
In fact, there are voices within the Atleti camp that advocate the permanent signing of the former Sevilla player.
However, an alternative report from SPORT claims that The Red and Whites I would consider the move only if Lenglet were available for free or for a very low nominal fee.
Atlético de Madrid has discussed the possibility of permanently signing the Barcelona defender, but for now the operation could prove complicated.
This is because there is no purchase clause included in Lenglet’s loan contract, meaning Atleti must renegotiate with Barcelona.
But given that Lenglet has shown a level of form not seen since his time at Sevilla, Atleti remain interested in acquiring the defender’s services on a permanent basis.
The ball, therefore, is now in Barcelona’s court. The Catalans are unlikely to make much of a fuss over the sale of Lenglet.
However, given the Frenchman’s recent form, it will be interesting to see if the club looks to maximize financial opportunities and hold out for a hefty price tag.
However, from a combined economic and sporting perspective, securing Lenglet’s permanent sale could go a long way to easing some of the pressure on Barcelona’s balance sheet.
For now, all eyes will be on Lenglet tonight when he faces his parent team in Montjuic.
